Senior UX Designer·Member since March 2023·Originally from Toronto, Canada

Three years ago, Inês Carvalho was commuting 90 minutes each way in Toronto, managing a design team she mostly talked to on Slack anyway. Her husband worked remotely for a Seattle company. Their daughter was two. The math, she says, wasn't complicated.

They landed in Porto on a D8 visa, found a four-bedroom apartment for less than their Toronto one-bedroom, and enrolled their daughter in a bilingual school within walking distance. Inês now leads UX for two fintech clients across European time zones, books coworking desks at Cowork Central when she needs whiteboard space, and has been known to attend standups from a café table overlooking the Douro.

She joined Roam after finding a thread where someone had mapped every pediatric English-speaking doctor in Greater Porto. "That thread alone was worth a year of membership dues," she says.

"We didn't move to Portugal for the weather. We moved because our daughter could walk to school and I could ship a product before lunch."

Portrait of Callum Fraser, SaaS founder living and working from a camper van in New Zealand

Solo SaaS Founder·Member since August 2022·Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland

Callum Fraser runs a B2B scheduling tool from a 1998 Toyota HiAce converted van parked, on a Tuesday in February, somewhere near Lake Tekapo. His 340 customers are mostly dental practices in the UK. They have no idea he's in New Zealand. He prefers it that way.

The product runs on Rails. Customer support happens between 7–9am New Zealand time, which covers late afternoon in London — close enough. He's been on the road for 19 months, averaging three weeks per location, and has developed strong opinions about which campgrounds have reliable 4G and which Starlink dishes survive New Zealand wind.

He found Roam through a Hacker News thread and stayed for the founder-specific channel, where someone had documented the exact tax implications of being a Scottish citizen running a UK Ltd. from outside the country for more than 183 days. "That one post probably saved me £6,000," he says.

"The van cost $14,000. My SaaS does $8,400 MRR. The maths only makes sense if you stop pretending an office is a prerequisite for productivity."
